Who does not love a curvy bookworm! Lisa Larson’s ABC girls (Swedish “ABC-flickor”) are among her most beloved figurines. They were designed in 1958 for the Gustavsberg factory outside of Stockholm, and then produced until 1973. The series comprises five striking women with names with starting letters A to E: Amalia, Beata, Charlotta, Dora and Emma.

Hand crafted stoneware pottery

The five figurines were made of stoneware clay mixed with chamotte, a finely crushed oven-proof ceramic. The chamotted stoneware gives the ABC girls the large grained rustic look that is so characteristic of Lisa’s pottery. The figurines’ hair, facial expressions, and the era-typical dresses were all decorated by hand, which gives them all an unique touch.

Light weighted book supports

Four of the five ABC girls are intensely reading books. Only Dora lacks a book, instead standing in a cool pose. The woman figurines were originally meant to be used as book supports, but they were too light weighted for that purpose.

Inspiration of fertility goddesses

Lisa Larson’s early artistic production was often inspired by ancient fertility goddesses. This is evident in the ABC girls’ swelling forms, which contrasted strongly with the skinny body ideal of beauty in the 1950s. The influence can also be noticed in the iconic unique mother figures from the late 1950s and early 1960s.

In the last few years of production, Lisa Larson’s ABC girls were produced with the expensive and time consuming chromo print technique. These rare girls with flowery dresses are now highly valued among the collectors.
